The Netherlands gaming authority, Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), has released its 2023 Gambling Market Scan, showing detailed information for 2022, the first full year of legal online gambling in the local market.

Online Casinos Driving Growth
According to the report, there has been a clear shift from physical casino gambling to online betting as the online industry accounted for 31% of all market revenue for the year. Casino games, both land-based and online, generated €1.9 billion in revenue throughout the year, up from the €1.5 billion reported in 2019 prior to the pandemic. This growth was primarily driven by online casino gaming as revenues for the land-based industry actually fell by 30% when compared to 2019.

Sports betting holds the smallest market share of 9% in 2022 (2% land-based, 8% online), up from 4% in the previous year. Despite a relatively small market share, the industry enjoyed significant growth with revenues of €319 million, up 262.5% on the previous year’s total of €88 million.
