The latest monthly revenue report from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has revealed that the state’s licensed retail and mobile sportsbooks accepted $386.7 million in wagers throughout the month of September. This was an increase of 85% on August’s figures.
Online wagers accounted for the lion’s share of sports betting activity as mobile sportsbooks reported receiving $354.2 million in wagers throughout the month, an increase of 84.2% on the previous month. Bay Mills Indian Community led the online market with a handle of $106.9 million, over $24 million more than nearest rival MotorCity Casino whose online sportsbook accepted a little over $82 million for the month.
Despite the significant increase in activity, according to the MGCB, an increase in large free play incentives from mobile operators across the board saw adjusted gross receipts from mobile sports betting drop by 99% from August to just $17,399. However, mobile sports betting still generated $426,872.20 in state taxes and $263398.24 in taxes to the city of Detroit.
Retail sports betting operators reported a monthly handle of $32.5 million with total gross receipts amounting to $3.4 million. Qualified adjusted gross receipts for the month increased by 109.8% compared to August. As a result, the three casino-based sportsbooks paid out $130,885 in retail sports betting taxes to the state while paying $159,970 to the city of Detroit.
