New York Mobile Sports Betting Primed for Launch in Time for Busy Weekend of Sport

The New York State Gaming Commission has announced that it has approved four mobile sports betting operators allowing them to launch on Saturday January 8th.

According to a press release issued Thursday, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel and Rush Street Interactive have been approved to launch mobile sports betting operations on Saturday, 8th January at 9 AM, becoming the first sports betting apps to launch in the state.

Although each operator has been told that it can commence operations from 9 AM, the commission stated that each mobile sports betting license holder would determine their own launch date and time based on the operator’s readiness and ability to accept wagers in accordance with its licensing conditions.

The commission approved nine mobile sports betting operators in November of 2021, but at present five of those license holders must “continue to work towards satisfying statutory and regulatory requirements necessary to launch and will be approved on a rolling basis when requirements are met.”

Previous estimates indicate that the New York mobile sports betting market could be worth as much as $500 million per year to the state.

New York and New Jersey both prohibit betting on in-state college teams, so sports bettors in either state who wish to circumvent this rule will have to travel to Connecticut or Pennsylvania.
