The English Premier League has asked that clubs vote on the implementation of a voluntary ban on gambling sponsorship on football kits ahead of a potential ban by the government.
In the 2021/22 season, half of the league’s 20 teams had gambling company sponsors on their kits
However, recent reports suggest that the football kit gambling is one of the recommendations that the government will choose to ignore. These rumors now seem to be somewhat verified by the Premier League’s latest move.
An email was sent to all 20 Premier League clubs with a decision on the proposal expected within the next week. A majority of 14 clubs would need to vote in favor of the proposed voluntary ban in order for it to be approved.
In recent weeks, both Everton (Stake) and newly-promoted side Bournemouth (Dafabet) have signed new long-term shirt deals with gambling companies. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace has opted to break from its gambling sponsor.
