The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) has decided to allow a rolling approval process for online sportsbook licenses, a decision which could see mobile sports betting apps launch as soon as their licenses are approved.
Retail operators FanDuel, Barstool, BetMGM, Caesars, and PointsBet could see applications fast-tracked
As previously reported, any business wishing to apply for a sports betting license in the state will need to submit its application by October 21st, 2022. It’s believed that following the decision to implement a rolling approval, the SWARC will take only 45 days to approve license. This means that online sports betting could launch in Maryland by the end of November or early December.
However, the SWARC pointed out that this rolling approval process will only be possible if it receives 60 or fewer applications. Sports betting legislation has capped the licenses at 60. If more than that number apply, the SWARC will need to compare applications which will slow down the process.
Sportsbooks such as Barstool, FanDuel, BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars Sportsbook, and PointsBet, will likely receive their licenses quite soon as all have been vetted by the commission and Maryland Lottery and Gaming for their retail sports betting services in the state.
