According to data released by the Swedish gambling regulator, Spelinspektionen, licensed gambling companies reported a turnover of SEK 27.4 billion (€2.4 billion) in 2022.
Gambling turnover grew by 5.1% year-on-year
The report also reveals that the online gaming and betting industry grew by just over 6%. The majority of the growth came through privately owned online gambling companies as state lottery and slot machines revenue remained largely unchanged from the previous reporting period.
However, the regulator notes that during the previous year, many gambling businesses were heavily affected by the global pandemic. This included land-based businesses facing temporary closures while the government also introduced responsible gambling limitations during lockdowns that impacted online revenue figures.
Reporting for the fourth quarter of 2022 reveals that turnover for the industry was SEK 7.2 billion (€634 million) representing a 3.2% increase when compared to the same period in 2021.
