Swedish Government Proposes New Measures Targeting Illegal Gambling Sites

New laws will also counter match-fixing in Swedish sport

According to Swedish gambling authority, Spelinspektionen, the government has proposed new measures designed to restrict illegal gambling companies from operating in the local market and limit the opportunities for match-fixing in Swedish sport.

The legislation was submitted to the Riksdag on Thursday December 15th and includes the following proposed measures:

  • Permission for Spelinspektionen to buy online gambling services under a hidden identity, so-called test purchases, to check that the gambling operator is complying with Gambling Act’s license requirements and promotion prohibitions

  • An obligation for gambling companies to hand over information to the police if required for an investigation into crimes in connection with gambling
